The Boxing Academy in Hackney breaks ground

Holmes Miller is excited to announce that The Boxing Academy, an innovative Alternative Provision school, has commenced site works this spring. This state-of-the-art facility is set to become a landmark in both education and design, offering a curriculum centred around the sport of boxing.

Located in the heart of Hackney, The Boxing Academy spans an impressive 1,500m² and is designed to accommodate 56 pupils and 30 staff members. The school’s unique educational approach provides students with an environment that encourages discipline, focus, and personal growth, while integrating boxing into their daily learning.

The thoughtful architectural design balances the needs for privacy and community, with teaching spaces arranged around a central private courtyard. This biophilic design element enhances the wellbeing and safety of students and staff, while fostering a connection to nature within the urban environment. The courtyard will serve as an integral part of the school, offering a peaceful retreat amid Hackney's vibrant surroundings.

Sustainability is at the heart of The Boxing Academy’s design, which works towards net-zero carbon in operation. Key features include localised natural ventilation, an air-source heat pump, and a blue/green bio-solar roof that generates renewable energy and supports environmental wellbeing. The project is fully aligned with the Department for Education’s Output Specification 2023, meeting rigorous educational and environmental standards.

James Bowie, Associate at Holmes Miller, commented:
“From the outset, it was clear that the school is deeply committed to its approach to education and to creating an environment that meets the needs of both pupils and staff. Through a series of successful collaborative workshops, we’ve been able to develop a truly unique learning environment that we believe will challenge and inspire AP education across the UK through integration with sport.”
