Passivhaus school to start on site

Holmes Miller are delighted that work is about to start on a further Passivhaus project for The City of Edinburgh Council.  The new annexe at the rear of the existing Sciennes Primary School will add 4no. new classrooms, flexible teaching spaces and support ancillary accommodation.

The existing Sciennes Primary School is category B listed and located close to the Meadows in Edinburgh.  The new annex has been carefully designed to be sympathetic with this setting in relation to the material palette and massing.  Internally the classrooms are semi open plan, with flexible spaces which are bright and airy providing the school with new state of the art teaching accommodation.  Passivhaus certification will also ensure a high level of indoor air quality and thermal comfort which, together with carefully monitored build quality, will not only reduce energy consumption but will aid educational attainment.

The new Sciennes Primary School  is a further example of Holmes Miller’s commitment to environmentally sustainable ethical design and building practices.  This has seen the firm appointed to design Scotland’s first Passivhaus-accredited swimming pool and leisure centre in Blairgowrie and a raft of Passivhaus and EnerPhit education projects across the UK, including the redevelopment of Trinity Academy in Edinburgh..
